The purpose of the study is to discuss three conclusions from the survey by Kollstedt et al. (2019) on hospital nurses’ perceptions of distractions to patient-centered care delivery. Distractions can be a significant challenge for hospital nurses, as they can interfere with their ability to provide high-quality patient care. Some common sources of distractions for nurses include alarms and alerts from medical devices, interruptions from other healthcare providers or staff, and administrative tasks that take them away from patient care activities. In order to provide patient-centered care, it is important for nurses to be able to focus on their patients and address their needs without being constantly interrupted or distracted. In the future, it is essential to improve the number of participants. Another limitation is that the study only used survey monkey to collect data. It is vital to incorporate interviews to get the appropriate responses from the nurses. Survey monkey may not deliver accurate responses. It does not give room for researchers to further probe the responses from the participants. Incorporating different research methods is critical for improving the quality of the findings.
Implications for Practice
The study shows that healthcare institutions should eliminate various distractions that can undermine the quality of care. One of the distractions is multitasking. It is crucial for healthcare management teams to enhance the patient-nurse ratio.
The second implication is to ensure nurses attend to patients in the patient room compared to the nurse station. A nurse station is prone to diverse distractions that can undermine care.
The third implication is that nurses should avoid distractions such as phone ringing or external noise. Other forms of distractions include computer problems and the demand to multitask. It is vital to deliver care in a quiet and serene environment.
Nurses have a duty to deliver quality care to patients without distractions. Nurses should identify the sources of distractions and eliminate them. Stakeholders in the healthcare sector should collaborate to eliminate distractions at the workplace.
